To know Christ and to make Him known

LENT
Engaging Lent 2020
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And he fasted forty days and forty nights…. Matthew 4:1,2
The celebration of Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) signals the coming of Lent, a key season in the Church calendar. This year Lent begins on Wednesday, February 26. We at Incarnation will join Christians around the world in marking Jesus’ journey to the cross.
We gather for our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, February 26 at 7:00 p.m. The service includes communion and the imposition of ashes.
What is Lent?

Lent is a 40 day season from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday. The five (5) Sundays of Lent are not included in the 40 days. This is because each Sunday we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. Lent is a time for us to join Jesus on his journey to the cross. It is an opportunity for us to slow down, catch our breath, and reflect on God and the gift of being created by God and loved by God. We also acknowledge and face the ways we have failed to trust God and love our neighbours.

The 40 days of Lent traditionally are tied to Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness. There he fasted and was tempted by Satan. Jesus resisted temptation by relying on God the Father. Jesus was able to face his trial after the Father declared absolute love for him: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” [Mark 1:11]. We enter Lent reminded of Jesus’ similar words to us: “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love.” [John 15:9].

What happens in Lent?

In Church tradition certain practices or disciplines are adopted in Lent. Fasting, or giving up something, is one example. Popular choices for Anglicans are foregoing wine, chocolate or other favourite food. We also can add something to our routine, like regular Sunday worship or learning to read the Bible or pray. Other examples are acts of caring for those in need and the marginalized. The point of these practices is to re-orient us to God. Then we can better appreciate the truth of our existence and the gift of Jesus. The closer we grow to Jesus, the more we become our true selves.

How can we engage Lent at Incarnation?

One key way we as Incarnationites can do Lent is through regular worship. We can attend Sunday worship each week during Lent. Please also plan to attend special services like Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, and Easter.

May this be an especially meaningful Lent for you.
God’s Peace, Richard

Lent and the Church Calendar

The Church calendar begins with Advent, when we anticipate Jesus returning to set all things right. We also reflect on Jesus’ first coming (babe in a manger). Epiphany follows, emphasizing Jesus’ identity as God who became one of us to rescue us from our brokenness and wrongs. Lent focuses on Jesus’ mission, culminating in the cross and resurrection. Pentecost commemorates the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit connects us to Jesus and provides all we need to live as followers of Jesus. The remainder of the year is Ordinary Time. This marks our opportunity to get to know Jesus and to join him in redeeming the world.
